Morrissey this weekend released a new written statement that manages to decry the ‘royal dreading,’ mourn the death of Poly Styrene, complain about his chart position and reveal the completion of his follow-up to 2009’s ‘Years of Refusal.’

For fans who’ll be in the Los Angeles area this weekend, this year’s installment of the Smiths/Morrissey Convention — set for Sunday at The Music Box in Hollywood — features an added attraction: an actual member of The Smiths.

This week’s new releases include a new Morrissey best-of, Mike Scott’s piano demos for The Waterboys’ ‘This Is the Sea,’ a vintage INXS live album, and reissues of The Fall’s 1999 album ‘The Marshall Suite,’ The Durutti Column’s 1989 record ‘Vini Reilly’ and a new audiophile vinyl pressing of The Psychedelic Furs’ ‘Talk Talk Talk.’

In a rare interview on British radio this week, Morrissey revealed that he’s in the process of editing a 660-page draft of his memoir, dismissed the idea of retirement by saying he’ll ‘die on stage’ and once again shot down any notion of a Smiths reunion (‘There really is no point at all’).

This week’s new releases include a new single from Morrissey featuring two vintage unreleased B-sides, a Norwegian-released album from Robyn Hitchcock, audiophile vinyl pressings from Echo & The Bunnymen, INXS and The B-52s, and a 3CD reissue from The Icicle Works.

The lineup for the 2011 installment of the venerable Glastonbury Festival was unveiled today, and, in addition to expected headliner U2, the massive fest also will feature sets by Morrissey, Big Audio Dynamite, Primal Scream, Hothouse Flowers, Robyn Hitchcock, Suzanne Vega, Billy Bragg and Nick Lowe.

As we gear up for the release of yet another Morrissey compilation CD — and a single backed by some unreleased B-sides —here’s a look at one of the The Smiths frontman’s greatest compositions: ‘Everyday Is Like Sunday,’ as performed in Sweden this past January by former Grandaddy leader Jason Lytle and John Grant.

For his first live dates since a series of trouble-prone 2009 outings, Morrissey will return to the stage this summer with a nine-date U.K. tour leading up to a slot headlining the Hop Farm Music Festival alongside such icons as Lou Reed, Iggy & The Stooges and Patti Smith.

As we reported last month, Morrissey is poised to release yet another compilation this spring — the 18-track ‘The Very Best of Morrissey,’ due out April 25 — and today we get a first glimpse at the cover art.

Morrissey in April will release a new greatest-hits collection — the 18-track ‘The Very Best of Morrissey’ — featuring an unreleased, Siouxsie-less version of ‘Interlude,’ and will precede the set with a single backed by two unreleased ‘Viva Hate’ outtakes.

Now here’s something you don’t see every day: A snapshot of Billy Bragg and Morrissey — clad in knee-bearing shorts and some sort of floral or Hawaiian shirt, with his tongue jutting out — at Canada’s Wonderland amusement park in Toronto while on tour with The Smiths in 1985.

Today’s assortment of online odds and ends includes a great new Smiths/Morrissey visual discography, a podcast of The Fall’s best Peel sessions, the first taste of Peter Buck’s and Steve Wynn’s second Baseball Project album, and an interview with Chrissie Hynde.

Exactly 28 years ago today, The Smiths took the stage for only their third concert — and only their second with the final Morrissey/Johnny Marr/Andy Rourke/Mike Joyce lineup — opening for Factory Records funk band 52nd Street at New Order’s infamous Manchester club The Hacienda.
