Sonic Youth preps ‘Bad Moon Rising,’ ‘Sister’ vinyl reissues, 1985 live album, SYR9 release

Sonic Youth, circa 2009

Noise-rock icons Sonic Youth will reissue two more early albums — 1985’s Bad Moon Rising and 1987’s Sister — on 180-gram audiophile vinyl in the coming weeks as they prep a French film soundtrack to be released as SYR9 in the Sonic Youth Recordings series and mix a new live album recorded in 1985.

The ORG Music reissues of Bad Moon Rising and Sister were announced back in February alongside new vinyl editions of 1983’s Confusion is Sex and 1986’s EVOL; the latter two came out in April as part of a Record Store Day promotion, but the first two were delayed. Now, Sister is due out Dec. 14 on black and limited-edition green vinyl, while Bad Moon Rising is slated for release Jan. 18 on black and limited-edition orange vinyl.

Meanwhile, Sonic Youth is still working on its soundtrack to “Simon Werner a Disparu” (aka “Lights Out”), a French film that screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The band revealed on its Facebook page Tuesday that the soundtrack will be part of the band’s experimental and sporadic SYR series: “finishing SYR 9 Simon Werner soundtrack (still!) artwork, mastering, never-ending.” It will be the first SYR release since 2008’s SYR8: Andre Sider af Sonic Youth, a live collaboration with Mats Gustafsson and Merzbow.

This afternoon, Sonic Youth took to Facebook again to make another announcement: “re-mixing a killer sonic youth live set from 1985 for release in 2011.”

There are other signs of activity as well; the band’s Facebook update mentioned “putting something special together for 3-lobed,” presumably a reference to Three Lobed Recordings. And Sonic Youth also is booked to play year-end gigs in Manchestser and London with the reunited Pop Group on Dec. 30 and 31.
