New releases: Simple Minds, Dinosaur Jr, The Jam, The Pogues, Elvis Costello, Blue Nile

ARTIST : Simple Minds
RELEASE: 5×5 Live
BACKSTORY: Jim Kerr and Co. this week release, in the U.K., a double-CD live album culled from this year’s “5×5 Live” tour of Europe, which found the band each night performing five songs off of each of its first five albums, including “Today I Died Again,” “Promised You a Miracle” and “Sons and Fascination” (see full tracklist).


ARTIST : Dinosaur Jr
RELEASE: Chocomel Daze
BACKSTORY: The reunited indie-rock titans this week follow up their just-released studio album I Bet On Sky with a limited-edition live album recorded in 1987 and released on 150-gram vinyl and limited to 2,000 copies, as well as in digital formats. There is no CD release planned (see full tracklist and stream a track).

ARTIST : The Jam
BACKSTORY: The Paul Weller-led trio this week releases, in the U.K., a 30th anniversary reissue of the band’s 1982 album in a 2CD deluxe edition and a 3CD/1DVD super deluxe edition that includes a 23-track live recording of a December 1982 concert from Wembley Arena and 13 previously unreleased demos and alternate tracks (see full details).

ARTIST : The Pogues
RELEASE: The Pogues in Paris: 30th Anniversary Concert at the Olympia
BACKSTORY: The Celtic folk-punk act this week releases, in the U.K., a 30th anniversary live package in multiple audio and video formats, including a deluxe 2CD/2DVD set packaged in a hardbound book (see full details and trailer).

ARTIST : Elvis Costello
RELEASE: In Motion Pictures
BACKSTORY: This week sees the release of a new compilation from the bespectacled rocker collecting 15 songs of his that have appeared in films big and small, including, “E.T.,” “The Godfather Part III,” “Notting Hill,” “The Big Lebowski,” “Grace of My Heart,” “Straight to Hell” and “Prison Song.”

ARTIST : The Blue Nile
RELEASE: A Walk Across the Rooftops, Hats
BACKSTORY: The two ’80s albums from the Scottish pop-rock act this week, in the U.K., are reissued in limited-edition, 2CD sets featuring remastered editions of the original albums, released in 1984 and 1989, paired with a disc apiece of rare and previously unreleased material chosen by Paul Buchanan and Robert Bell.
