Video: Peter Murphy opens all-Bauhaus tour in San Antonio, Texas

Peter Murphy tour poster

Just a month after his arrest on DUI and meth charges in Los Angeles, Peter Murphy last night opened his world tour celebrating the 35th anniversary of Bauhaus, performing, as promised, a set of songs by his former band at a club in San Antonio, Texas — hitting everything from classics “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” and “Dark Entries” to deeper album cuts like “King Volcano.”

Below, you can check out video (via djfell13) and a partial setlist from last night’s show; we’ll add more clips as they become available and flesh out the full setlist as that information becomes available.

Murphy’s tour continues tonight in Austin, Texas, and continues across North America through mid-May before heading to Europe for a month, and then returns to North America in July (see full dates).

The singer, meanwhile, has pleaded not guilty to the charges stemming from a traffic accident last month.

  1. yes. it is true. I am extremely excited for this.

  2. A couple of things about this video make me kind of sad.

First, he would be playing much bigger venues if Bauhaus would have actually toured behind their comeback album. And second, what is it with all these people filming the show instead of enjoying it?

I know we wouldn’t have seen this video if someone hadn’t done it but, wow, the amount of people doing filming and screaming and yelling without actually listening is amazing.

    • I agree. The amount of camera work is ridiculous. Jesus put down the friggin’ wall-o-iPad. There was a time people would rip these outta your hands and trash them.
Not impressed by the 2nd rate venue either. Turn down the lights. Nice projection onto the back of heads, NOT!

  3. nooneyouknow

Looking forward to the show tonight in Austin. From what I can tell is looks like a small turn out resulting in an intimate setting.

  4. No “Sanity Assassin”?!!!

  5. I saw Bauhaus for the 2 reunion shows..I have a hard time seeing Peter do a complete set without the rest of the Bauhaus lineup.
    That is just my thoughts…

    B A U H A U S

    forever

  6. NO Daniel Ash, NO Bauhaus.
    Sorry Pete.

  7. Batshiz Crazay

Looks about as fun as going to a show to see Axl rose and 4 other guys you don’t know the names to play songs from a former band.

Murphy has the honor of playing in his very own Bauhaus cover band!

  8. Roger Waters said the same thing about people recording (instead of simply enjoying the show), when he was asked the difference between then and now…wonder how Mr. Moonlight feels about it??

  9. Glad to say I won’t be catching this in my city (Mr Twilight tour…
I don’t know what’s worse, Pete’s recent solo material or his solo interpretations of Bauhaus tunes. Either way, I can’t sit through it)
No Daniel, David, Kevin means no Bauhaus or Moonlight.
    Peter, you’re a fool.
You might as well become the vocalist for Peter Hook’s The Light though it’s nice to see you pretend to play guitar. You make the other guy look good.

  10. If Peter wasn’t the lead vocalist on almost every tune he would never be able to do this. Imagine Daniel Ash going out and doing a tour of Bauhaus material with him singing lead or hiring another vocalist?

    Never happen.

My guess from all the touring Peter has done in the last couple of years since his last solo album is he needs the money. You don’t do this amount of touring otherwise, no matter how much you like performing. Even people who tour in luxury have a hard time with it after a while and I doubt he is touring in luxury and he is in his mid 50s.

I am a fan and saw him on the Deep and Holy Smoke tours and the last Bauhaus tour. They were all in the same venue, which was 3,000 seats, even all those years apart.

I read somewhere Bauhaus got a bad record deal and that Love & Rockets did also, I doubt Peter got a good solo deal considering they were all the same label. Even if they have their own publishing, which I hope they do, records aren’t selling and royalties aren’t what they used to be. You literally have a whole generation who think music is something completely free of charge. Between technology and what the major labels did to the music industry in the late 90s it’s amazing anyone can make a living as a musician anymore.

    Sorry about the rant.

  11. Hence the constant touring of some artists. And some don’t
even make records any-more! (Sisters of Mercy anyone?)

    • I know that’s why so many groups are reforming and touring. The Pixies are a perfect example. They literally did it for the money and I don’t blame them.

  12. I’m sadly passing on this one. Saw BAUHAUS on the reunion tour and it’s not the same with just Pete. Still love him.

  13. A friends attended the first night show and said Murphy was fine and gracious the firrt fifty minutes and did one encore and then told the crowd: ‘that’s all you’re getting from me tonight’ and stormed off the stage. Even his band members seemed perplexed. My opinion is Murphy should be GRATEFUL for peeps to show up for this joke of a tour. Always the DIVA, never appreciative – just when he wants to be. It’s ALL about the Benjamins. SAD!

  14. Murphy is losing it! This whole tour is a joke. He had the audacity to say that ‘this band is a BETTER band.’ Umm, I HIGHLY doubt it. Bauhaus is not Bauhaus w/o Ash, Haskins and David J. What a Holy Fool.

  15. Those San Antonio comments and antics are further proof that Peter has truly lost the plot–and, as RazzATazz says so perfectly, he does not appear appreciative of his (diminishing) fan base nor his freedom! Instead of hosting expensive slumber parties, phoning in live performances, and touring excessively with his current band of goons, he needs to take a break and do a major rethink. First, he should count his blessings, then get fit (see ya, paunch!), and ultimately look to Robert Smith and Steve Kilbey and their respective bands for major inspiration, namely performing three classic albums live in their entirety. (And, yes, I know The Cure performed way more than that recently–just AMAZING!) Then he needs to get The 100 Men back together and triumphantly tour behind the holy trinity of “Love Hysteria,” “Deep,” and “Holy Smoke.” I’m dreaming, yes, but it’d be doable and a heck of a lot more admirable and rewarding than his recent career moves. Otherwise, I’d say bow out gracefully–thank the fans, hop into that infamous Forester, and drive off peacefully into the sunset.

  16. ^ ANDYP – You could not explain what Murphy should do re assembling The Hundred Men more perfectly and touring for Love Hysteria, Holy Smoke, etc. The problem with Murphy is that he burns bridges with everyone he works with, and then the new band members are just the best and superior per Murphy’s hedonistic, always taking about himself incessantly, always spewing the same sh*t – it’s just old and tiresome (like Murphy and his babyfits). Seriously, if Murphy should read these comments, PLEASE re-read again and again ANDYP’s comments and think long and hard what was said as it couldn’t be more simply put. BTW: your shows are boring! Saw you twice last year and you’re not the same persom that you were when you toured DEEP in the early 90’s and you were so appreciative of your loyal fanbase; now it’s all just a BIG joke (like this stupid tour). Whatever MR. MOONLIGHT, ‘I.M AN ICON, ONE OF A KIND, MAH-VE-LOUS DAHLING.’ That’s right – keep telling yourself that dude.

    • Thanks for the backup, TazMania. Yeah, the burning bridges thing totally makes sense, especially since he is doing it more and more with the fans now. (“Is that smoke over San Antonio?!”) And as so many other Eyeballers have pointed out, the whole thing is truly sad. We’re wondering what the heck is going on because we care about him or once cared about him. I saw him twice on the endless “Ninth” tour. The first show was surreal for mainly all the wrong reasons–basically just a handful of people were there, half of which seemed to be out for Saturday night drinks only to find themselves in the middle of a Peter Murphy concert! The second show was totally disappointing–he was clearly on autopilot, doing the same boring peacock moves, playing a cozy 14-song set, and cutting things short to cash in on the meet and greets. One of the few highlights of the shows was, ironically, “Ziggy Stardust.” So now we have Bowie’s “The Next Day,” which I still have to pinch myself about, and increasing rumors that he is actually going to tour behind it. Of course there is only one David Bowie, but here is “the elder” aging gracefully, feeling inspired and creative, garnering rave reviews, and blowing away fans–when he could deservedly and proudly call it a day. Meanwhile we have “the youngster,” Peter, lost in a fog, especially when it comes to performing his own music, whether it is this current tour shaming Bauhaus, or doing solo stuff, which typically means performing the weaker/easier tracks from “Ninth,” a version of “Subway” that sounds like Sean Connery does Peter Murphy, and a track or two from “Deep” or “Love Hysteria,” if you’re lucky! There is, or was, a legacy there. How sad and pathetic that he doesn’t want to preserve it the right way.

  17. I heard from a friend who attended the 04/24, Dallas show that not only were P.M.’s vocals bad and muddy, but that he was VERY RUDE to the people who paid extra for the meet and greet. And he said it was beyond ridiculous the amount of people, that were holding up I-phones, cell phones, I-pads, instead of just watching and intaking the show. As stated above, this tour is a joke and it has only just begun.

  18. Not sure what.s going on but Murphy toured here (San Francisco) at least 8 times since 20111. He just stands and does his movements with his arms, like he.s flying. GONE are the days of the man who commanded the stage and danced, sang and had mind-blowing theatrics, whirled and twirled – NOW HE JUST STANDS THERE AND WALKS IN PLACE, BENDS DOWN LIKE HE.S STRETCHING AND USES HIS ARMS TO MIMIC SWAYING AND FLIGHT. Bottom line: my days of seeing him are done. And this tour was my final nail in the coffin. HE.S LOST HIS DAMN MIND. Was a HUGE fan and never missed a show when he would rolled in since 1990, but I.m done. He.s turned into such a major wanker!!

  19. HMM – VERY INTERESTING COMMENTS INDEED; UNFORTUNATELY THEY ARE SAD BUT TRUE. MURPHY, WHO IS SO IN LOVE WITH HIMSELF, HAS REALLY LEFT A BAD TASTE IN PEOPLES’ MOUTH BY HAVING THE AUDACITY TO DO THIS RIDICULOUS TOUR! I, TOO, WAS AN AVID FAN SINCE 1985, BUT THRU THE YEARS AND FAST-FORWARD TO TODAY’S DATE, I CAN’T STAND WHAT HE’S TURNED INTO. HE BURNS BRIDGE AFTER BRIDGE AND JUST KEEPS ON METHING, oops MOVING ON. SHAME ON HIM TO DO A WORLD TOUR W/O THE ORIGINAL REMAINING THREE BANDMATES. YOU ARE A JACKASS, EEE AWW, MR. MOONLIGHT!

  20. IN RESPONSE TO TINO.S TWO COMMENTS ABOVE, THE REASON HE.S PLAYING AT SMALL VENUES IS CUZ NO ONE.S BUYING TICKETS AS HE.S BEEN TOURING NON-STOP SINCE 2011, NOT TO MENTION HIS OVERPRICED MEET AND GREETS, AND THE $4,000 (and up) LAS VEGAS MIRACULA SESSION -AND- THE $500 A TICKET FOR THE HALLOWEEN MIRACULA (of which only 30 people went to). SO THAT.S THE REASON WHY – PEEPS ARE BURNED OUT AND NO ONE WANTS TO SEE BAUHAUS UNLESS IT.S ALL FOUR ORIGINAL MEMBERS (no offense to the current band). ALSO, AS EXPRESSED, LONG-TIME FANS HAVE HAD IT WITH MURPHY; HE.S NOT THE SAME HUMBLE MAN FROM THE 1990 DEEP ERA, AND US LONG-TIMERS ARE MOVING ON AS IT.S THE SAME OLE/SAME OLE. SHAME ON HIM FOR DOING THIS TOUR, IT JUST GOES TO SHOW HOW ARROGANT THE GUY IS. I (WE) SAW BAUHAUS TWICE WITH THE ORIGINAL BAND AND IT WAS INTENSE, MIND-BLOWING, THEATRICAL BUT MURPGY.S BARELY INTO THREE SHOWS AND PEEPS ARE COMPLAINING ALREADY. THAT.S WHY WE.RE NOT GOING TO THE S.F. SHOW (good luck MR. MOONLIGHT, sounds like you’re going to need it)!

  21. OoogaBooga

In response to CANDYGIRL, a group of our friends are not going to the S.F. show either for two main reasons: ONE: We want the real deal, ALL FOUR ORIGINAL BANDMATES; and TWO: P.M. is going to be so burned out as the S.F. show is at the end of the tour. If he’s ALREADY acting like a baby, being rude, and throwing tantrums then Lord knows what condition he’s going to be in by the end?!? As stated above, good luck dude, sounds like you need it! Not sure what you’re trying to prove, but you’ve pissed off A LOT of people by doing this ridickulous tour!

  22. CliffFaller

Talk about karma okay here’s something funny a friend pointed out: John Lennon’s classic song ‘INSTANT KARMA – WE ALL SHINE ON,’ well Murphy sounds like he’s falling off a cliff with his hideous rendition of it when he’s singing ‘ … on and on and on and onnnnnnnn …,’ it’s hilarious! And Murphy’s rendition of Bowie’s ‘Major Tom’ is absolutely horrid! I would be pissed if I were Bowie. PLEASE, no more renditions P.M. unless it’s something of caliber like Reznor and you doing Joy Division’s ‘Atmosphere,’ you can redeem your pretentious, stuck-up self on that one, or should I say ooonnneee and wonnnn and onnnnn as I’m going down a cliff? Oh, and I, too, concur with ANDYP – you need to get The Hundred Men back, that’s when you had it back in the days, but you burn bridges with everyone (truth be told). And shame on you for doing this tour, and stop bad-mouthing the Haskins brothers! No doubt you’d still be talking smack on Ash, but you’ve made up with him. You’re just a 55 year-old greedy, stuck-up, tantrum throwing fit baby! GO BACK TO YOUR HUMBLE ROOTS.

  23. TruthBeTold

WOW – I WAS GONNA THROW IN MY TWO CENTS, BUT WITH THE TRUTH-BE-TOLD COMMENTS THERE IS NOTHING I CAN SAY THAT HAS NOT ALREADY BEEN SAID. THERE ARE SOME GREAT COMMENTS HERE FROM PEOPLE THAT ALL FEEL THE SAME WAY. I, TOO, WAS A LONG-TIME FAN OF P.M. BACK IN THE EARLY 90’s DEEP ERA AND HITTING EACH SHOW IN NORTHERN CA, SOMETIMES TRAVELING TO SEE AS MANY SHOWS WE COULD CRAM IN (WHICH WOULD BE ABOUT FOUR/FIVE); AND FOR PLACES NOT CLOSE TO HOME WE’D COMMUTE, GET HOTEL ROOMS – ALL TO SEE THE MAN WE SO ADMIRABLY ADMIRED. NOW AFTER TOURING RELENTLESSLY SINCE 2011 FOR ‘NINTH,’ I HAVE TO SAY THAT AFTER (unfortunately) ENDURING A SHOW IN 2011 AND 2012, I AM DONE! I DON’T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MAN WHO COMMANDED THE STAGE AT HIS ‘UNSHATTERED’ TOUR WITH HIS STAFF (big stick) AND MIND-BLOWING MOVES, BUT THIS DAY AND AGE HE IS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT PERSON FROM BACK IN THE DAYS. NOW IT’S ALL ABOUT CASH MEET AND GREETS. THIS BOGUS ‘MR. MOONLIGHT’ TOUR IS A JOKE! SHAME ON HIM TO DO THIS TO BAUHAUS’ LEGACY!! I FEEL FOR DANIEL ASH, DAVID J. AND KEVIN HASKINS. BAUHAUS IS NOT THIS, NOR IS IT PROPER, JUST CUZ HE’S THE LEAD SINGER DOESN’T MAKE THIS RIGHT BY ANY MEANS! IS HE GONNA DO THIS ON THE 40th, 50th, 60th, AND IN-BETWEEN ANNIVERSARIES? LET BAUHAUS BE AND R.I.P. WITH ‘GO AWAY WHITE,’ NOT MURPHY’S ‘MR. MOONLIGHT JACKASS TOUR,’ OR ANYTHING ELSE HE SHOULD ATTEMPT TO CASH IN ON IN THE FUTURE (which, no doubt, he will). HE NEEDS TO GO AWAY TO HIS (B)LOW ROOM AND REFLECT LONG AND HARD OR ELSE HE’LL BE PERFORMING AT YOUR LOCAL TOWN’S STATE FAIR EVERY YEAR. BETWEEN THE OBNOXIOUS THINGS HE SAYS IN HIS INTERVIEWS HOW HE ‘CARRIES THE BAUHAUS FLAG,’ AND ALL THE: ‘I’M ONE IN A MILLION,’ ‘AN ICON,’ ‘I’M WHAT BOWIE SHOULD HAVE BEEN’ IS JUST DISGUSTING! TO SAY THAT ABOUT BOWIE – SHAME ON HIM! HE IS THE ULTIMATE HOLY FOOL.

    • Amen, TruthBeTold. I’m in NorCal, too, so we have likely seen some of the same shows over the years–both the great and the absurd. “Mr. Fly By Night” would be a much more apt name for this current tour. Changing it to something like “Return of the METHod Man” would seriously piss off the Wu-Tang Clan guys, and Peter already has enough people upset with him at this point.

  24. A few friends of mine attended the Baton Rouge show and Peter Methy thought he was in Pensacola, nice way to appease the audience (NOT)! And, here we go again, apparently the vocals were muddy and it was a sub-par show with a rush to get the meet and greet done. I said that’s what you get for supporting this lame-ass tour. Thank God for this site to express the truth as P.M. has his goon squad called THE PETER MURPHY APPRECIATIVE TEAM ready to pounce on (and remove) any negative comments posted by peeved peeps to his site. Folks, you have posted some great and amazing comments! Hopefully it will spare anyone thinking about going to this obnoxious show and save their cash for something of substance You guys made me realize NOT to go after all, plus it’s at the very end of the tour and one can only imagine what a mess the whole downward spiral will be by then.

    • “Hello, Pensacola!”?! Nice! Wonder if he was even aware of that inexcusable goof. If so, probably didn’t care and/or will resort to a safer, “Good evening, good people of wherever the f#ck I am now!” at all future stops. “Hello, Cleveland!” might have worked, since this whole mess has taken on Spinal Tap proportions. But one major difference: Spinal Tap is funny. I hear you about the importance of this site, LosingIt. Any Peter news at Eyeballs typically gets tons of comments, the majority of which are negative. Strength in numbers, baby. By spreading the word, we might get something positive out of this. But my prediction is the tour won’t even make it to the West Coast. Another arrest, near empty venues, or band implosion will make him call it a day. He’s already gone through at least two bassists since ’11. My guess is the drummer bolts next. Poor dude looks genuinely uncomfortable up there. This band comes across as young, spooked yes-men, so am guessing mutiny lurks. On a brighter note, if Beggars releases a Peter box set, as they are doing with some of their other (former) artists, he would likely try to cash in on it, meaning more touring and a better chance of hearing the great solo stuff people want to hear. But hard to know how many of us might still be around by then.

  25. FrankBooth

^ ANDYP – LOVE your comments. Did you know, or hear, the obnoxious comment said by P.M. to the first drummer at the beginning of the Ninth tour? When P.M. was introducing the bandmates to the crowd in Santa Cruz,CA, he actually had the audacity to say that “since the drummer is new (a greenie”,) he CAN’T LOOK ME IN THE EYE UNTIL SIX MONTHS HAVE PASSED. We were all WTF?!?, does he think he’s so superior to be making Tom Cruise, Christian Bale comments, or the British Monarchy re how one is to not make direct eye comment unless bowing down? Well a BIG FU#K U to P.M. you moronic prick, like you’re so special – you really think you are above IT ALL, especially hitting someone and taking off. I’m so glad that dude chased you down. Did you tell him “to not look into your eyes” while he penned you down and waited for the cops? JUST GO AWAY!

  26. TooMuchP.M.ToTake

Well I’m gonna throw in my two cents. No reason to be repetitive, I hear and totally see/understand where everyone is coming from: been there since the beginning, the middle as well, and unfortunately for the meth/mess of a man P.M. has turned into. What really got me, in addition to ALL things stated, was when I saw the SEE SAW SWAY video and on the fireplace mantle there were at least seven to nine solo pictures of P.M. in big-ass frames. Talk about conceited, AND
WTF was that stupid video about = NOTHING! It made no damn sense, just like everything else P.M. has been doing since 2011. Longtime fan no more, CIAO Mr. Moonlight, GO BACK TO YOUR ROOTS (and The Hundred Men, but I am sure you’ve burned your bridges with them too). You are a true wanker, like someone wrote on your page and your goon squad hasn’t caught it yet: “YOU’RE PATHETIC, RETIRE ALREADY”!

  27. Hey, FrankBooth. The only thing I remember hearing about the Santa Cruz show was that PM, allegedly, got all pervy making passes at at least one female fan. Had not heard about those drummer comments, but, sadly, I can totally hear Peter saying them. “Humor” at another’s expense. There are some great drummer jokes out there, but those comments are down there with the lowest of lows. Totally reminds me of those horror stories about Captain Beefheart brainwashing bandmembers and holding them captive. Am guessing that’s the same drummer he has now, and for those of you who have seen any of the recent tours, am sure you’ll agree the guy looks like he’d rather be anywhere else than sharing that stage with you-know-who. (MESSAGE TO DRUMMER: FLEE WHILE YOU CAN!) At the first “Ninth” show I saw in Orangevale in ’11, I thought at least PM has a crackin’ band now, mainly because of the bassist he had at the time. But as mentioned earlier, that show was beyond surreal–highlights/lowlights included PM letting fans rub his paunch, inviting newlyweds up onto the stage, and trading verbal jabs with the club owner, while about 80 of us collectively stood there with our mouths open wondering if we were going to get some more music out of this! I was there with my best friend celebrating his birthday. Before PM hit the stage we were reminscing about how “Holy Smoke” was the Holy Grail when we were DJs in college. Little did we know that sheer madness was right around the corner… Still, a memorable show! But the wheels were clearly coming off when he came to Sacramento in ’12. The vibes between PM and band and PM and audience were not right. So to think that the same thing is happening well beyond the “Ninth” degree now with this current Bauhaus tour makes me think something has to give real soon.

  28. FrankBooth

^ANDYP – Hello once again! Thanks for the info re the Orangevale show (very interesting). Yes the Santa Cruz show was a joke. P.M. was very frisky that nite, not only with the girls but he kept taking guys that were up at the front and rubbing their poor heads all over his sweaty half jean/half leather pants’ crotch area; he’s lucky there were no hicks there or else his ass, I’m sure, would have been beat to a pulp. Also to pass time, I guess so he wouldn’t have to perform, were rounds of passing the mic, telling us ALL non-stop how horny he was, Q&A sessions with us, rubbing his man boobs, constantly adjusting his thong so his ‘junk’ would be salami-sized, etc. We have been following him for 25 years and when we heard he was playing in Santa Cruz we were all ‘road trip.’ We also saw the same show in Sacto that you saw for Ninth. Sadly it was a joke! We live in Northern CA and since Deep have journeyed to all shows he would perform at in our region. The Holy Smoke show in Sacramento and S.F. was mind-blowing, as well as Cascade, Deep, even aLive Just For Love; that’s the man who commanded the stage! I don’t know if it’s the Internet-era, but gone are the days of waiting for Sunday’s pink section of The Chronicle to see when he would be rolling in. AND now at the shows are kids of parents who grew up listening to Bauhaus talking incessantly throughout the whole show and the endless stream of peeps holding up their frikken phones; I guess that’s why he’s playing in such small venues and no more BIG clubs like The Warfield when he did Deep there and Wild Birds tour. I’m like you and most folks here, just pissed at what he’s become! That’s why it’s over for me; I’ll support many others like The Furs, Bowie (if he should do a tour); and the MANY OTHER great bands/solo singers that aren’t a prick like Murphy!

    • Cheers, FrankBooth! We HAVE seen some of the same shows. But I’m sure as heck glad I missed out on that Santa Cruz madness. In a word: drugs?! I first saw him in ’88 at the Orpheum when he shared a bill with the Church. I was there to see the Church, who headlined and put on a really good show, but PM just blew me–and the Church–away! I could see why everyone around me was totally mesmerized–and most of his fans seemed to exit the venue right after he did! (Funny that the Church could now slay his ass onstage or anywhere else they pleased!) The next day I ran out and bought the “Love Hysteria” cassette (!) and it lived in my VW Rabbit happily ever after! Passed on the “Deep” tour because I couldn’t bring myself to seeing him at Great America. That Warfield “Holy Smoke” show was something special. “Low Room” with that extended riff and booming drums was such a killer opener. And “Rock and Roll” as one of the encores?! Awesome and gave me a whole new appreciation for Zeppelin. Thought that Warfield “Cascade” show was a mixed bag, starting with Jewel as the opener! “Wild Birds” got things off to a great start, then hit-or-miss after that, especially with the new band. Was thoroughly bummed that “Gliding Like a Whale” was the last song, instead of so many older and better choices. So when “Ninth” came out, I kept telling people that PM was “back with a vengeance!” And then it all started going south…(sigh) But maybe Peter will read the review of last night’s Orlando show (wink wink!) and that dream and more will come true! I’m afraid it’s my last hope. Like you, it’s better to show other faves more love and support–for me, that’d be Bowie, Neil Finn, Paul Westerberg, Steve Kilbey, and more. Have already spent way too much time and energy (apologies for all my rambling posts!) trying to get Peter to come around.

p.s. Did you see the Furs at Slim’s in ’11? What a show!!!

  29. I’m not sure if I imagined all this or what. But I thought I just read something about the whole “Mr. Moonlight Tour” being called off. The report went something like this: Peter Murphy fans in Orlando got a two-fold surprise on Monday. First was news that tickets were being sold for an unannounced concert to be held that evening in the city center. Then those fortunate ticket-holders were treated to an unexpected formal apology from Murphy himself, followed by more of the unexpected. A lone Murphy walked onto the stage and greeted fans with the following: “Thank you…Uh…I first must say that Mr. Moonlight has retired. You the fans have spoken, and I have heard you. Moreover, Daniel, Kevin, and David have not spoken to me, and that says so much, too. I knew the original idea (Mr. Moonlight Tour) was a reach, but still thought I could pull it off. Wrong. So instead, let me share some of my own stuff with you, okay. Right then. Let’s do it!” Gasps from the audience turned into applause as the lights dimmed and Murphy’s band joined him on the darkened stage. What ensued was a three-hour performance from a clearly re-energized Murphy and his accomplished band. Fans fed off the energy from start to finish. “Oh, my God! That was AWESOME!” said Monica Hayes of nearby Winter Park. “At first he came out alone and started apologizing. I was like, What is going on? Then the music started and it was just amazing. I could finally hear these songs!” Added Brian Simms of Orlando, “That was unreal! He’s still got it. The band was tight, and it was one classic after another. A couple times he said, ‘I love you, Pensacola!’ And we were like, ‘Dude, it’s ORLANDO!’ But that was cool. Near the end of the show I even heard some fans chanting, “We love Peter! We love Pensacola!’ Love was in the air, man!”

In more good news for the Murphy camp, in a statement released earlier this morning, Subaru has agreed to sponsor the rechristened ‘Holy Deep Hysteria Tour.’ Murphy’s music will also feature in the company’s new Forester ad campaign. Said Subaru rep Takahiro Shimizu of the new agreement, “Mr. Murphy has given us a lot of free publicity this year. He has also convinced us recently that he wants to get his life and career back on track. In return, and as genuine fans ourselves, we at Subaru want to help him accomplish these goals.” The next stop for the ‘Holy Deep Hysteria’ tour is tonight in Miami.

  30. TO PMDAWN: WTH ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, OR IS THIS P.M.’s GOON SQUAD TRYING TO REDEEM HIM? YOUR COMMENTS ARE VERY CONTRADICTORY AND I.VE SEEN NOTHING ON THE WEB TO SUBSTANTIATE YOUR MOST BIZARRE STORY, ESPECIALLY TO DO WITH THE SUBARU STORY. AND, HOW WOULD P.M. HAVE TIME TO TRAIN HIS GREENIES ON A WHOLE NEW LINE-UP? YOUR STORY IS VERY SUSPICIOUS!!??

    • Relax, UMM,O.K. How about rereading that first sentence–with John Lennon playing in the background, if needed. And while you’re doing that, I’m gonna go chase the Easter Bunny out of my backyard. I don’t know why he keeps showing up here.

  31. Hello. I saw PM in Charlotte last night, and he rocked! My fiance said he was coked out, but I don’t know. I didn’t see any of the behavior that people were complaining about. He hardly talked at all. What little he did say wasn’t rude. At one point, he brought the opening band onto the stage, introduced them all, and gave them hugs. He was energetic, even funny sometimes. The band was tight and enthusiastic. (For anyone who goes to an upcoming show: watch the drummer’s facial expressions–classic.) The only diva behavior that I saw were a couple of times when he got annoyed because equipment wasn’t working right. He threw a stand and a mini-keyboard.

Most of the complaints on here seem to be on the order of “He is a pale shadow of his former self” and “He is an egotistical, drug-using, rock-and-roll diva.” I can’t speak to the pale shadow because it’s the first and only time I ever saw him. All I know is that the relatively small crowd was into him. And to be 20 feet away from PM at a smallish, dirty, black-painted rock club–how cool is that! And are you seriously criticizing the dude for having rock-and-roll attitude. THIS JUST IN: Rock Star Has Big Ego, Hits on Chicks, Acts Like Ass. Gimme a break. Go see Paul Simon if you want to see a real gentleman, eat cucumber sandwiches, and applaud politely. This is fuckin’ Bauhaus!

  32. p.s. His set list included most of the same songs as in Antonio, but not all. There was one new song from an upcoming album. Also, he covered Bowie’s “Be My Wife” and didn’t do “Telegram Sam.”

Interesting that after so many people were sharing their comments, the forum mysteriously was not taking “submitted comments.” Now, after days of NO ACTIVITY a mysterious post appears from a wanker who says: “This is fucking Bauhaus.” I smell a P.M. street-team rat; go back to the JAILHAUS and let Bauhaus R.I.P.

  38. We caught the show just to see if MAYBE it would be good and we left majorally disappointed! Had we known what was up we never would have bothered. But we did get to see Murphy throw a few tantrums, some equipment, and cuss the sound guy out. No interaction with the audience, no whirling or twirling. I guess it was a bad night for him, but justified what the long-timers’ comments were saying. Trust those that have been there, not a bunch of 28 year-olds out on a weekend night.

  39. This site, for unbeknown reasons, stopped (or would not) accept written comments after some most interesting, and, I am sure, truthful submissions from a select few that were exchanging 30 years of stories. Now – after a dork who for the FIRST TIME sees P.M. says: ‘THIS IS FUCKIN BAUHAUS,’ and BAM the site is taking comments again. What the HELL?

  41. Man, there are some serious trolls on here. Someone challenges your picture of the world and you immediately resort to personal insults? I keep looking for, and failing to find, some online venue for postpunk fans that isn’t troll-ridden. I’m no “plastic poseur” or “dork” or “PM street rat” (and please–the all caps?) At least get the facts straight. I was never a huge Bauhaus or Peter Murphy fan, but I decided to listen to as much as I could and then go check out the show with an open mind. (And not that I need to defend myself against trolls–what’s the point–many people whom I respect say my taste in music is great.)

Here is my point. You have two ways to go:

    1. Cling tightly to the magical ideal of a 1980 Bauhaus, and hate the PM show because a) it’s not 1980; b) it’s not the 1980 lineup; c) Peter Murphy is not the same person as he was in 1980 and doesn’t look the same; d) the venues aren’t the same as Bauhaus played in 1980; e) the people at the show aren’t “true” 47-year-old Bauhaus fans who were there right from the beginning and can tell how great everything was then and how terrible it is now, i.e., they’re not as cool as you. (I wore a bright shirt to the show in defiance of the mandatory all-black uniform.) This approach guarantees that you end up condescending, bitter, and disappointed. Just scroll up to see what I mean.

    2. Have no preconceptions and expectations, and just appreciate what there is to appreciate about the show. Maybe there is nothing to appreciate, but maybe there is. Be open to what you see and hear.

Whether anyone takes approach (1) is a matter of the profoundest indifference to me. It doesn’t seem like much fun to me, but it’s not my choice to make.

I took approach (2), and I happened to have a great time at the show. It might have gone the other way, but as it happened, it didn’t. My partner, who WAS a big Bauhaus fan back in the day, and saw them at their peak, also enjoyed it. PM wasn’t a jerk the night I saw him, in fact he was the contrary, and the band sounded tight. The band had a good time; the audience had a good time.

You all seize on “this is fuckin’ bauhaus.” That was a poor choice of words. I should have said it differently: “this is PM.” I simply meant: PM is an iconoclastic, rebellious 80s era rock star, and he is playing with a band of rockers. I don’t have the expectation that rock stars of this type behave like perfect gentlemen. It is puzzling to me that anyone would.

  42. GothChick

… gotta back up devo on this one. what’s with all the hating and personal put-downs? you all criticize PM for being a jerk, and then act like jerk yourselves!

not sure i agree it’s either approach 1 or 2 … i’m more 1.5 … i have realistic expectations. i saw PM in boston and he put on a good show. not the man of old, but how could he be!

p.s. devo, if you like trolls, check out nwoutpost.com. they run grinning through the fields there.

  43. Saw him in Detroit last night. Had a great time. Don’t know why people are complaining that this is not Bauhaus. Well, it’s not. It’s like the billing says, “Peter Murphy celebrating 35 years of Bauhaus.” Price was right, people were friendly, nice cozy venue, Mr. Murphy’s voice sounded great, music sounded great, it was a fun rocking show!

  44. Dean Martian

I was just catching up on old SUE posts and read this one because my wife and I just saw this tour last week in Chicago. And, man, I’m shocked by all the negativity here. We loved the hell out of the show. The venue was packed and Peter sounded great and performed for nearly two hours despite suffering from a bronchial infection. The band was tight and did a fine job of mimicking Ash and the Haskins. We paid a little extra for the meet and greet, and Peter was funny, charming, and very gracious. In fact, I’ve seen him a few times in the last several years, and he’s been funny and vocally appreciative of his audience at every show, even at the couple of SXSW shows I saw, which have to be miserable to play.

  45. Pasha Insider

I ltike Peter Murphy. A whole lot. I like Bauhaus as well. And I prefer see Peter perform his solo works with maybe a few Bauhaus tracks thrown in. Saw the show in Miami and truthfully got a bigger kick out of him yelling at the sound guy and enjoyed watching him pose and stare at his crotch (which he made sure to put into both male and female faces, alas, not mine) than the music. I was bored. (I do get bored.) Ha!

One thing I enjoy about a PM show is that he can be so chatty and funny at shows, and engaging with the audience. This didn’t happen at this show. (Or any of them, from what other reviews have said) The audience spent most of the night talking to each other, watching the concert through their phones, and using Facebook.

It’s obvious Mr. Murphy needs money. But I too am very confused by this tour. I think he has enough of a fanbase to do a “regular” PM show, or, why not do Deep in its entirety? He did it on the west coast with great reception. Why not do it now? 35th anniversary or not.

I will say that I had the pleasure of meeting him at the overpriced and very rushed meet and greet. I’m very happy to report that he was very nice. At least to me. We spent a few minutes chatting (his assistant Wendy was getting a little annoyed) and he was charming. He also checked out my boobs. I guess I got him on a good night. And damn, Mother Nature. Darn period. I’m not going to the (b)Low Room with him. Hell No! I’ll go back to his Holiday Inn Express!

Having said all this, I did not enjoy the show. Was bored. Disappointed. Wanted to hear Cool Cool Breeze. Wah.

Peter, we will go see you regardless. Your ego has become a little too much, even for a long time fan like me. Do what you do best. Sing! Perform! And stop acting like you are the King of Everything.

    • Love the honesty, Pasha Insider. If Peter reads what you wrote–and I bet he or someone in his camp will–there might be hope!
He just met you, and obviously you made some positive impressions(!), so knowing these words are from you and echo the feelings of so many other Eyeballers might make him ultimately come around. Am not holding my breath for it, but also haven’t completely given up yet… Thanks for sharing. :)

  46. Pasha Insider

Thank you, AndyP! Please forgive my typos. And speaking of typos, (and the now running joke of “Hello, Pensacola!”) have you seen the back of the shirts from the North American tour?

    Hello, Pensecola.

    How does that even happen?

    • What?!!! I want a cut of that! No, actually I hope it helps Peter pay the bills, etc. Too funny, but proof that he or someone in Camp Murphy reads this stuff!

Thanks for the heads-up. Off to track down a shirt… :)

  47. I actually meant reviewer PM Dawn should be getting a small percentage of those sales… (Cover blown–hush hush! :))

  48. Sorry, Pasha Insider. I kind of lost sight of the typo you mentioned and got more intrigued about the likelihood of Peter visiting this site. Yeah, pretty lame, especially when you think of the greeting’s history: first, a shocker/turn-off to Baton Rouge fans, then a Spinal Tap-like joke, now a money-maker, with little concern for spelling or the original fans who must have been more offended than amused. This whole tour has been such a…trip, to put it nicely. And you were just there in the thick of it–up close and personal right beside him! But am glad that your experience had some positive moments. Again, loved how your post was so candid about everything, both the good and bad. It was a great read–and hopefully for HIM, too.

Deevo0: Passionate fans do not equal trolls. You yourself said, “I was never a huge Bauhaus or Peter Murphy fan”. Kind of a strange thread to get on since you don’t have the history like we obviously do. Your thoughts are welcome but we feel we are losing our icon, in a slow, painful train wreck kind of way. He is not a rock star, he is OUR rock star. That is the point of why we are so disappointed on how things have turned out. Especially of late. Nothing wrong with us wanting to see our rock god go out on top.

  50. Saw the band before white album. Come on guys. We want the real line up. Get past your stuff and play music
