Watch: Nick Cave finds Bobby Gillespie in London audience for show-closing duet

Nick Cave has been ending the shows on his current tour with the Bad Seeds by filling the stage with fans during blistering performances of “Stagger Lee,” then bringing things way down with a trance-like “Push the Sky Away” in which he often climbs out into the audience.

Saturday night in London, during his foray into the crowd (as the band continues to play “Push the Sky Away”), Cave sees a familiar face: Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie. He shouts “Bobby!” then announces to the audience, “Bobby Gillespie,” before muttering what sounds like “Fuck, man.”

Cave embraces Gillespie, and continues singing (“And some people say it’s just rock and roll / Oh but it gets you right down to your soul”) before handing the mic to the Primal Scream frontman, who picks up the chorus. Cave then thanks him, and there’s more embracing before he makes his way back to the stage.

It’s not clear whether Cave knew Gillespie was in the crowd, if he was guided there by stagehands, or if he just happened to spot an old friend in the crowd. Either way, a nice ending to the show.

Below, you can see the entire performance of the song on YouTube (Cave finds Gillespie a little after the 3:05 mark). But we’ve also got a very close-up clip courtesy of Primal Scream bassist Simone Butler.
