No ‘Dark Wave’ this weekend as Sirius XM’s David Bowie channel takes over 1st Wave

A programming note: The weekly Slicing Up Eyeballs-hosted “Dark Wave” program on Sirius XM’s 1st Wave will not air this Sunday as the classic-alternative channel will be taken over this entire weekend by the satellite radio network’s new limited-run David Bowie Channel.

“Dark Wave” will return Sunday, May 10.

The David Bowie Channel is one of nine limited-run streaming channels launching Friday on Sirius XM’s website and app, including temporary stations devoted to Prince, Metallica, The Rolling Stones, Guns N’ Roses, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, George Strait and the Eagles.

The Bowie channel will feature music from across the Thin White Duke’s career, including rare tracks and demos of some of his greatest songs, as well as covers of his work by artists including Nirvana, Beck, Annie Lennox, Duran Duran and more. Though the channel will be part of Sirius XM’s expanded digital lineup, it can also be heard on car radios this weekend when it takes over 1st Wave (Channel 33) from 9 a.m. Eastern on Friday through 3 a.m. Eastern on Monday.

Sirius XM is also expanding its free app and online streaming through May 31. Sign up — no credit card required — at siriusxm.com/streamfree.

  1. haunted when the minutes drag

Look, I love David Bowie. In fact, I am in my home office looking at a black and white Bowie poster from a concert in the mid-70s. But why on earth is there a need for an all-bowie station? Or any all-single artist station?

These days, it seems like that is all there is for music stations on Sirius XM (Pearl Jam, Beatles, Elvis, Springsteen [and the other reoccurring temporary one Billy Joel, Dave Matthews Band . . ]). No matter how much of a fan you are of any artist, who needs to hear them 24-hours a day? (I give tom petty’s station a pass, cuz’ he was cool as fuck – but still . . . ).

  2. Your show is just great, and I thank SiriusXM for the ability to bring it to my device. Where else can one hear Sisters of Mercy covering the Stones. And NO ONE save this show gives any respect to the great David Sylvian and his work

    Thanks

  3. That fucking Douche Matthews Band station. I think I’ve heard enough jazz explorations on the alto sax to last a lifetime.

And hey, I love Bowie as much as the next guy but I dont need a station devoted to him.

although, a guilty pleasure of mine is that all-Elvis station. with the gospel songs…are you kidding me ?

  4. Bring back safety dance, party 360, and dark wave. I look forward to it every weekend. Come on I love Bowie but I like the variety of first wave so much more. Can’t you just add a Bowie station instead of screwing with the programs.

  5. I too love David Bowie.

I also love the variety of 1st wave way more.

I don’t want to listen to any one artist constantly.

I’m a bit miffed with sirius xm right now. I still can’t go out and socialize, AND you took away my favorite station.

    Lame

  6. If anyone deserves their own (temporary or permanent) station, it’s Bowie – probably the coolest person that’s ever existed on earth, and has influenced just about every band that’s existed.

    I’m OK with this.

Sucks. Can you play The Bog, By the Steel Works next week? Thanks, Matt

  8. Dawn Baker

Please keep a Bowie Station All the Time..

  9. Edward Gerecs

What happened to the Bowie channel? I tune it in and there’s no Bowie.

    • It was only being broadcast over 1st Wave for the weekend. No you can only listen to it via the Sirius XM website or the app. Go to either of those and search “David Bowie Channel” and you’ll find it.

We don’t need yet another dedicated channel. Except for Dark Wave, satellite radio has sucked since Sirius bought XM and effectively shut it down. Why not a Dark Wave channel? First Wave is basically bubble gum alternative. At least XM had multiple alternative channels. Keep up the good work Matt!

I agree, a Dark Wave channel would be awesome. I didn’t care for the full time Bowie channel in lieu of First Wave. Especially didn’t like not having Dark Wave this past Sunday.

    For next week:
    The Cure – Cold
Siouxsie and the Banshees – Bring me the Head of the Preacher Man

    Thnx 4 the great shows!!!

    Here are our 2 request

    Cocteau Twins Fifty Fifty Clown

    Skinny Puppy inquisition (Single Mix)

    Gracias, aug & Tina

    Bowie is God.
    Period.

  14. Greetings Dark Wave Beings

Yeah i think the whole artist dedicated channel is oversaturated. i am still waiting for U2X. David Bowie is cool to have his songs interpreted on his own station. Let’s consider STP & REM too. how bout a college rock with deep cuts station? more experimentalism.
