Lou Reed’s ‘New York’ to receive 6-disc reissue with unreleased studio, live tracks

Rhino Records this fall will release a 6-disc expanded reissue of Lou Reed’s 1989 solo triumph New York, a collection that will include previously unreleased studio material, a full live reproduction of the record, a DVD and a double-vinyl pressing of the album.

The 3CD/DVD/2LP set — available for preorder now — is due out Sept. 25 and comes packaged in a 12×12 hardcover book with new liner notes by David Fricke and essays by Don Fleming. It was produced by Reed’s widow Laurie Anderson, Fleming, Bill Ingot, Jason Stern and the late Hal Willner.

The set’s first disc include a newly remastered version of the album, a song cycle about New York — one of Reed’s most acclaimed solo albums — that produced the No. 1 modern-rock radio hit “Dirty Blvd.”

The second disc rounds up live versions from the Lou Reed Archive of each track on the album, compiled from multiple sources — not including any from the concert featured on the set’s DVD.

The third disc includes 10 unreleased studio takes from New York, including “Last Great American Whale” and “Dirty Blvd.,” as well as the 7-inch version of “Romeo Had Juliette” and “Dirty Blvd.” B-side “The Room,” plus, somewhat incongruously, live versions of “Sweet Jane” and “Walk on the Wild Side.”

The DVD includes the first reissue on that format of “The New York Album,” Reed’s 1990 concert film originally released on VHS and laser disc. It’s a full performance of New York filmed Aug.  13, 1989, at Theatre St. Denis in Montreal , Canada. It also includes an audio-only interview with Reed.

And the vinyl edition included in the set presents New York for the first time as a 2LP set on heavyweight 180-gram audiophile vinyl.

  1. What? Just standard black vinyl? No multi-colored vinyl with splattered designs? It’s like they aren’t even trying anymore.

    Great album, though!

    • Agreed on the actual material. Stella album, and a real ‘timestamp’ for me. Listened to it all summer long. “There Is No Time,” is my favorite track. That and, “Romeo Had Juliet.”
Going to pass on this particular version, though. I’m at peak exhaustion with these fussy – 3 disc, 45 rpm slabs of vinyl. Two songs per side. Not conducive to a good listening experience.
They did the same thing with Weller’s new album, “On Sunset.” 10 songs, spread over two discs. No reason for this but for the extra cash Polydor can charge.
