The The to release new 7-inch single “$1 One Vote” later this month

The The will release its third new 7-inch single in six years later this month, a song called “$1 One Vote” that bandleader Matt Johnson says has been “percolating” for a number of years but that he finally has been able to finish thanks to the “nascent dystopia of the last couple of years.”

The limited-edition vinyl single will be released by Johnson’s label Cinéola in partnership with earMUSIC on Feb. 24 and features, on the B-side, the first-ever physical release of The The’s 2007 digital-only single “Mrs. Mac.” The sleeve features preciously unseen artwork by Johnson’s late brother Andy Dog.

The new single can be pre-ordered from Amazon.com and The The’s official site.

Of the new “$1 One Vote,” Johnson says on the band’s website:

“It is a song that has been percolating – in various versions – for a number of years. For some reason I was always having trouble finding the right words to finish it off. But the nascent dystopia of the last couple of years has certainly opened eyes, sharpened minds and clarified thoughts.”

The song “$1 One Vote” was recorded by Johnson with Eric Schermerhorn and Earl Harvin, both members of The The in the late ’90s and early 2000s, and more recent collaborators Barrie Cadogan and Gillian Glover. And Johnson played everything on the recording of “Mrs. Mac.”

Johnson reactivated The The in 2018 for tours of the U.K., Europe and the U.S., culminating in the Comeback Special live album and film. He also has released two vinyl-only singles under the The The name in recent years: 2017’s “We Can’t Stop What’s Coming” and 2020’s “I Want 2 B U.”
